Last night I was reading ‘Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents’ a book by Isabel Wilkerson and I read “Live with it long enough and the unthinkable becomes normal.” I couldn’t stop re-reading it and thinking (like flashes) about all the not normal things I experienced growing up but I had no reference for what was normal, so I thought they were normal. It wasn’t until I was living on my own that I started to realize just how abnormal my upbringing was. For me, alienation wasn’t just cutting me off from family members, alienation was the method for cutting me off from all of mainstream society. This is why I am an advocate for the term “Child Alienation” instead of “Parental Alienation” – when a child is alienated, they aren’t just alienated from their parent, they could be alienated from extended family, as well as society. The CHILD is alienated.
