Why do people who have undergone serious trauma or sadness have ‘dead eyes’?

One of the most common maladaptive responses to stress and trauma are dissociative disorders. Essentially, because of the extreme emotional pain experienced by the brain, a coping mechanism that distances the sufferer from their perceptions takes over. During these dissociative states, sufferers may lack connection to reality and may feel as if they are in a dream or trance. This would explain the stare.
