The Kray ‘brand’ was paramount from the outset, powered by their fearsome mother. They were born in 1933, and she taught them in their cradles, in Bethnal Green, that they were special.
More to the point, she made sure that everyone in the neighbourhood knew that her twins, in their matching blue coats and white berets, were not to be messed with. Later, she sent them round to a notorious local villain to be steeped in stories of cop-killers and the good old bad old days.
It all lodged in their minds and their personalities. ‘From an early age,’ said Reggie, ‘we took it for granted that we’d end up being famous.’
